Shot another look for my style entry today. I picked up this dress at Sportsgirl last week, its not my normal style precisely but I found the print and the draping sleeves intriguing. And then I saw it was reduced from $129 to $29, so I thought that a reasonable price for an experiment.

The necklace I am wearing has sat in my closet for a long while, I love it but I couldn't find what to pair it with - problem solved! It is a venetian glass creation from a local designer who sells at markets around the Gold Coast.

Of course I had to participate - I chose to do an 80's shoot, in part because I am quite the little power dresser, but also, with my hair, how could I not? Plus I have heaps of mother's vintage 80's clothes in my closet.

I recently discovered youth-label Dotti is currently hosting monthly design competitions where the great unwashed can submit ideas for items they would like to see in stores. Dotti provides a short design brief, and then you can post up a sketch of your interpretation. For July, the task is to design the perfect party dress, fit for race days, formals and Christmas parties. Fun!

Here is my attempt, the 'Miss D' dress.

I aimed for versatility - black is worn by pretty much everybody and can be worn everywhere. Plus, as I tried to demonstrate, my dress can be styled to fit in with many different aesthetics. If you would like to see my look in stores, you can vote for it here. In the end the panelists choose, but a designs popularity is taken into certainly taken into account.

I spent my Sunday happily browsing at an outlet shopping complex, and found...a super snuggly, plush animal fur jacket for, wait for it, $20!

The pelt's colouring is rather more like a lynx than a leopard, something which makes me adore it all the more.

I couldn't resist wearing it today, so I received more than a few looks at the library whilst researching Goya for an essay. I may be an over-dresser, but I am a happy over-dresser. Purr.

Putting my military assertions into practice - I love this look! The romantic tulle skirt, pearls and soft cream blouse perfectly diffuse the sharp black jacket and crocodile handbag. I suppose my loose hair balances my strong make up too, but that is a regular occurrence as you know since I never vary in that department.

I have always lusted over military coats, no doubt due in part to my Napoleon obsession and passion for sharp tailoring. My infatuation with Reynold’s famous painting of Lady Worsley depicted en militaire does not help matters one little bit. Of course I had yet to actually buy a coat of my own, however I stumbled upon this in ValleyGirl whilst looking for something warm to put on when a gust blew up from nowhere (and promptly disappeared, damn schizophrenic weather!) and promptly whipped out the cash.

It is a charming blend of jacket and cardigan, made of a tailored, thick cotton, so it is soft as well as hard-lined, perfect for flattering the waist. Rest assured, military style is not merely the domain of androgynes and rock chicks, but can be incorporated into a classic and ladylike look with ease, as Georgiana here so beautifully demonstrates.

This was a fitting costume for our dear Duchess, as she was largely responsible for the look's creation and subsequent popularity amongst womenfolk. In 1778 the English became rather antsy about the possibility of an Anglo-French war, and subsequently started up a number of military training camps about the place. The Duke of Devonshire attended one such camp in Coxheath, accompanied by his Duchess. Of course Georgiana could not participate directly in the action, however caught up in the spirit of things, she and her fellow aristocratic ladies dressed up in military inspired garb to show their support. The look was a hit, The Morning Post of the period commenting "Her Grace the Duchess of Devonshire appears every day at the head of the beauteous Amazons of Coxheath, who are all dressed en militaire, in regimentals that their Lords, etc, serve, and charms every beholder with their beauty and affability" (Quoted by Foreman in The Duchess).

I couldn't resist playing about on polyvore and created some different versions of the ladylike military look, I think the trick is to soften the hard lines of the military coat with feminine fripperies, think scarves, full skirts, tulle and lace.

Oh Sunny Day

Nothing like a dash of saffron to spice up winter, not that we ever really get anything approximating cold here in sunny ol' Queensland! I feel yellow to be one of the most under appreciated colours, the general consensus seeming to be that it suits very few skin tones. I imagine its lack of popularity in fashion at the moment feeds the latter opinion to some extent - it takes experimentation, and the observation of other's experiments of course, to discover the true potential of a colour. Personally I have found that, whilst lemon makes me look dreadfully insipid, a rich, honey hue brightens up my features considerably and can be paired with cool tones to striking effect.

My outfit today was particularly inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite painter John William Godward's With Violets Wreathed and Robe of Saffron Hue mixed with a dash of Marc Jacob's Spring '09 collection.

Well I attended Fashions on the Field again, and though I didn't earn myself a place this time, I was very pleased with my outfit. It has always been a dream of mine to create an english-aristocrat-visits-the-estate-with-phesant-feathers-and-redingcote look, so I very pleased to finally have the opportunity to sport it.

The ensemble was made possible by the new addition to my wardrobe, a 1940's pheasant pillbox found in an a charming little vintage I recently discovered in Southport called Del-Re's *adores*

The pillbox design means I can wear it more casually than I might a broad brim Don't be suprised if you see me wearing out on a day to day basis as well...

Vivid Sydney

I was excited to see a series of monumental Sydney buildings lit up with historically inspired projections as a part of the Vivid Sydney campaign. The effect was striking, though I do wish my fingers didn't go numb from the cold whilst taking photos! The light shows are not static as they appear here, rather the images move and shift, enhanced by appropriate sound effects . It is well worth seeing if you are in the area, it continues throughout the remainder of June.

Whee the vintage fair was fabulous! So much pretty, so many prettified people! I found some gorgeous pieces to adopt which you definitely will be seeing over the blog posts to come...

I decided to get all period for the occasion, which gave me the opportunity to wear my new leopard fur hat I found at David Jones. The rest of my outfit, fittingly, is vintage, courtesy of mother, grandmother and eBay.

I met fellow vintage devotee Erin there on the day, the moment I saw her outfit I knew we'd get along. Love the hair!

I just noticed Racing Fashion Australia has posted photos taken of the Prime Minister's cup fashions on the field. I'm not allowed to reproduce said photos, but you can view the gallery here. I'm featured fully in number 65, and am grinning madly in the background of a bunch of others. I was really excited to see so many other beautifully dressed women their on the day. The vintage look definitely reigns supreme on the track. Of course in my opinion, that is the case everywhere!

On that note, this weekend is the second The Way We Wear Gold Coast Fashion Fair. There will be a display of garments once worn by Edward VII and Queen Alexandria as well as a French couture ballgown. Stalls from vendors from throughout Australia will be featured alongside, so you can take a little bit of history home with you. It will be held from 12pm - 6pm Saturday and 10am - 3pm at the Greek Community Centre in Bundall. I'll be there with bells on...or rather, a fabulous 50's frock *wink*

On the subject of toiles, Longchamp has recently brought out a selection of handbags featuring a traditional pastoral scene with elegant ladies and gentleman of yesteryear - and of course a horse or two. The bags come in various sizes and shapes and are available internationally (yes Australia gets them too, I've seen them in the Sydney store with my own eyes.) The print comes in three colours, black, blue and red - they'd be just perfect for a history student for lugging about all those books don't you think? Or just anyone really, like one needs an excuse!

Dayna Wandrey won best dressed, and Sarah Gillham best hat. Unknown to the judges Dayna actually designed both outfits, sourcing her friend's headpiece from ebay. Her unique clock handbag was actually once her grandmother's jewellery box. I was impressed by the judge's selection, she looks wonderful. The contrast between the frilled shirt and structured plaid skirt is just perfect and the circular ruby brooch subtly echoes the ornate clock face.

Dayna last year was the winner of Queensland's fashions on the field final. I actually had saved her picture to my computer a couple of months ago, it was funny to find myself standing next to her!

I attended the Prime Minister's cup today - my first fashions on the field, and I was a finalist for best dressed! Most exciting. The winner was just beautiful, and had a clock for a handbag! No photos of her yet, but I'll post as soon as they are published.

I wore my new, wait for it - Trelise Cooper En Militaire dress, previously gushed about here and here. On my last trip to Sydney I walked straight into David Jones and there it was, on the sale rack, my size, the only one left. I am not ashamed to admit I squealed. Loudly.

I wish we still wore hats everyday.

Yesterday I went to the Easter fashion parade at Marina Mirage and decided it was the perfect opportunity to give my tulle skirt its first outing. I actually bought this last year, however the smallest size was much to big for my waist, so I had to get it tailored . Took me awhile to get around to it obviously *blush*. From the moment I saw it I thought of Grace Kelly's look in Hitchcock's Rear Window.

I initially decided to pass on this dress, since I already have heaps of leopard, but I did mourn, since the spots were just so perfect. Last weekend I was walking through the shopping centre however and saw it reduced to $79, that's 78% off the original price! Happy am I.

I wore this out to have afternoon tea with Mother at Marina Mirage, and the funniest thing happened. As I was sipping my milkshake a tour group of Koreans walked past, and a little lady meekly asked if she could take a photo with me. Well that seemed to give the rest courage, because soon enough everyone was asking for a bunch with me and everyone in the coffee shop was laughing for the next twenty minutes.

I am so excited, I picked up a Jayson Brunsdon dress (as seen at Rosemount fashion week) halfprice! The fabric has always reminded me of desert rock, wouldn't it look fabulous in an Uluru shoot?

Ta-daaa! Much better camera right? This outfit features one of my other fabulous presents, a Louis Vuitton silk Stephen Sprouse scarf! Best suprise ever, thank you Mamma.

Oh and despite having photoshop I didn't actually fiddle with the contrast of this - I point this out only because this is my actual colouring. My hair and eyes looked really different under the lens of my old camera - finally my hair appears as red as it is!

Ok here's the story - my internet broke. Can you hear my pain? I need not explain the impossibility of blogging as a result. An entire month internet free was...an experience at the very least.

I am eager to move on from that dark period, let us never mention it again. Happily I have some good news to report: I recieved two christmas goodies that will greatly help improve the quality of my posts from this day forth - a new camera and tripod, as well as photoshop! *applause* Though I couldn't post them, I have been busily taking daily outfit photos nonetheless, and will upload them post haste.

An Difficult Match

Animal print was something I would have said should stay far far away from sequins at all times lest one end up looking like Grandma Yetta from The Nanny.

But whilst my mother and I were pre-boxing day scouting I came across this Gregory Ladner clutch and had to have it.

I like that he has chosen to mimic ocelot, an under appreciated cat with simply lovely markings.

I wouldn't say I am a complete convert however to the sequin/animal combo, but almost anything can look good somehow or another I have decided. Mimosa has recently done a pixelated tiger print sequin skirt that I have my reservations about. Some too-cool-to-live night club dweller could probably pull it off with verve, but I am afraid that such people are far and few between.

As always, the final verdict remains in the eye of the beholder.

The Lady With An Endless Appetite for Shiny

Exciting times to report! I am now doing work experience in a boutique! Fun, educational, and tiring. Never be rude to a shop assistant I tell you, its hard work.

I have had to restrain my urge to buy everything in sight for the sake of my bank balance, but I couldn't resist this red wiggle dress by Mr K. The fabric is lovely and thick so it smooths and holds well (nothing worse than a tight dress that clings in all the wrong places). My search for a red dress has been long and arduous, nothing seemed right until this. It was kind of a crime that I didn't have one too, since red is my favourite colour. Nothing is more dramatic, wild, or attention grabbing than red :D

The colour is more of a crimson in life, but blogger is choosing to be contrary and throw it off.

My dear friends have been very kindly as well, agreeing to my request for money to ebay rather than presents. This has resulted in more than a few more things being knocked off my Lust List.

Mimco Necklace. This satisfies my urge for queenly looking jewels within an un-queenly budget. I really like Mimco jewellery, its hard to find costume items that don't look tacky, and they succeed admirably.

Vintage Leopard Frock. Mustard yellow is the only yellow that suits me, but unfortunately is quite rare. Consequently I was beside myself to find this dress which blends 50's and leopard in with it.

Country Road silk dress. Regal and cool for the summer months.

PS. I'm sorry for my spotty blogging of late, I've just been rather tired. I just finished my last exam so once I re-energise I should be more regular once more.

Earth Tones

I just picked up this little gem on ebay, isn't it adorable? I am a sucker for a quirky print, and tan is such a versatile colour.

I really do wish more designers would produce clothing in brown tones. It is a truly unappreciated shade and some variation of it is flattering on almost all colourings. I have seen some talk of the 'Little Brown Dress' in European magazines, so perhaps it shall be back in fashion soon? I think chocolate is a softer substitute for black, that doesn't trade in any of black's subtlety and class.

Joy! Lady Bea gifted me these lovely sandals. They have been hardly worn due to the fact her feet have oddly gone up a couple of sizes since she bought them two years ago. I have documented here previously my desire for dress sandals, so I am very pleased with this development, if not rather sorry for her. I give her plenty of things from my closet however, so I'm not too guilty.

I was inspired by Marion Cottilard today, and her interesting habit of putting sandals with structured classic dresses and suits that would usually be paired with courts.

Each are cloth bound and imprinted with symbolic designs in some way linked to the text. Austen's Emma features peacocks, Great Expectations chandeliers. They are surprisingly inexpensive too - Lady Bea procured hers for $20 each.

A Jewel in Sydney

Sorry sorry sorry! My absence has been too prolonged to be forgivable, but I do have an excuse - a holiday in Sydney, mainly visiting my grandfolks and Lady Bea. Computer access was alas rather more limited than expected and the days I could type away I was far to tired to do so. I will be returning home tomorrow, but Lady Bea has kindly lent me her laptop so I can write this.

I spent a lot of time up here scouring vintage shops (Grandma Takes a Trip and The Vintage Clothing shop are two I highly recommend) but unfortunately luck did not favour me this trip. Such is the way of vintage wear. However I did visit Edit and was wonderfully rewarded with a gorgeous scarf in the fabric I was pining over in this post. Isn't it divine?

As for the chain stores...blah. Even more irritatingly, many are stocking identical designer rip offs, particularly in the shoe department. For shame.

Evidently, I have returned. Whilst I'm not entirely through the exam period yet, today I finished some of the more draconian assessments *collapses in a heap*. I spent the afternoon enjoying my freedom, sipping tea and flipping through the pile of glossies that had accumulated in my mad study week.

Is it just me, or a fashion trends getting progressively uglier? A sense of proportion seems to have thrown itself out the window. Nothing wrong with a platform heel, but when the platform is so fat the toe area looks like a brick, and when said platform is coupled by a razor thin stiletto...trouble is afoot (haha, unintentional pun). Personally, I think clothes should echo and enhance the figure rather than distort it.

I digress, it is not what other people choose to admire that I am concerned with, but my own whims and fancies. Spoken like a true narcissist, heh. Surprisingly, nothing in the magazines caught my eye so much as a silk cushion on the interiors page, accompanied with a brief tagline that it was from Edit, a brand I had never heard of. Of course this was not ordinary cushion, the frabric was printed with painted antique jewels fit for a queen. It looked as if it would be perfectly at home nestled in the depths of a rich velvet armchair...

The internet search results I procured whilst pursuing details on this cushion merit sharing. Edit, it turns out, is not a brand as such - rather, it is a high end boutique in Surry Hills, Sydney that as far as I can tell, stocks items exclusively produced for itself. The brainchild of a former Vogue Living editor, I doubt anything is not of the highest quality. Unfortunately, the prices match the beauty of the pieces, however I could really see myself saving up for some of the pieces on offer. I have no qualms paying for uniqueness, quality, and love.

Summer is here, not that it ever goes far from the sunshine coast. To me, summer means tonal browns and creams with a touch of gold to catch the light. It also means simplicity, enforced by one's inability to wear layers without suffering heat exhaustion. Since I can't be minimalist for the life of me, stand out dresses are a necessity.

I began the day with good intentions: search for those elusive sandals and for those sandals only. No sandals however, were found.

And then, in the midst of a David Jones sale rack, did my eye alight upon a decidedly un-sandal like shoe...

Could I resist? No, dear reader, I could not.

They are so divine! And shiiiiny *admires* The imperial purple and jewels give them a very queenly presence to my eye - they remind me distinctly of Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra. Fittingly, the costumes for that film almost bankrupted the film studio producing it.

Post-Script: Should anyone in the Gold Coast region be interested they did have a few sizes left and currently they are at 40% off.

The Quest For the Summer Sandal

Alas, my nature predispositon towards ever-so-refined courts has left me woefully unprepared for the soon to be untolerably hot summer months. It has occurred to me that my next shoe purchase ought to go towards addressing this lack, however my forays into shoe world have left me in a rather dismal moos. Very few shoes appeal to my eye and address practical concerns (of course my idea of practical isn't exactly the norm being a rare non-heel wearer - but I certainly do have height and support limitations).

This Jigsaw pair seem the most promising out of the mainstream brands, but I really do wish the whole thing was in the lizardskin. I happen to know they are comfortable, having tried on a pair in their winter selection. The problem is, I'm in mourning for that particular pair of copper sequined beauties, to which this pair sadly pales. I am of the opinion one ought to only buy what one loves...I can only hope I stumble across something perfect at a boutique somewhere. Why didn't I have money to buy the copper pair? *bawls*

I have recently begun to work for my mother's company. Only for minimum wage, but I'm a hard worker :) So once I had amassed enough funds to buy something decent off I went to Marina Mirage for some quality shopping. Only two purchases, but I'd rather quality than quantity any day.

First up: Charlie Brown 'Legendary Lioness' dress. So pretty! I love how textured the print looks and even better, it was half price :)

I picked up this gorgeous Cue top a couple of days ago, so I wore that today. Its so hard to find structured tops, which are really all I can wear not tucked into skirts other than skin tight tees. One of the trials of having an hourglass shape is that unless its waisted, you look as wide as your bust and hips, which means appearing a two sizes bigger than you actually are.

This dress is one of the oldest things in my wardrobe, I bought it at about fourteen if I recollect correctly. Recently however I took it to my tailor to see if I could have it modified: originally it had a drop waist, and though I liked it, I always thought it would be perfect if only it was high waisted. My tailor worked her magic and my wish was granted.

Monochrome has recently become rather interesting to me. Maybe it is as a result of seeing so many 'daring pairings' i.e. a leather bomber worn with a tulle skirt and so on, that bland is the new bold? It seems to be more of a winter look, because you can't wear enough layers in the heat to create the effect - perhaps when it cools down I'll give it a whirl.

They sell all sorts of absolutely beautiful jewellery and accessories based around items in their collection. Recently they have opened a store on the Gold Coast which is very exciting, but they also have one in Sydney should any of you wish to see the items in person and happen to be in that neck of the woods.

Conde Nast is one of the largest magazine publishing companies, they own Vogue, Harper's etc. and therefore have access to a tremendous amount of beautiful photographs. Prints of spreads and covers all the way back to the 10s and 20s are available at their store, but if you don't feel like buying you can always just admire from afar...

A Spot of History

I was pondering the history of leopard print today - I know it has been used as ceremonial garb for some royal dress over the years, but I was curious when it entered into the wardrobes of the masses. My research yielded no solid results, but Lady Bea and I theorised it probably first sparked off widely in the Egyptian craze of the 1920's when Tutankhamen's tomb was discovered. Lady Bea did however find a French regency fashion plate featuring a leopard tippet which is rather awesome.

EDIT: I just found this site, which seems to confirm some of our theories: "Spotted cats begin to appear in women's fashion furs in the late 1920s and 1930's, however, this was not the first time they were worn by women. That honour would fall to the Amazon women depicted on classical Greek vase paintings wearing leopard spots. Before them King Tut was depicted in leopard skin. Lynx and leopard were worn by women in the mid 18th century, and 19th century British officers had leopard skins underneath their saddles as a distinguishing mark."

I can't account for the source's accuracy, but it is from a university website so that adds some merit. Regency women taking cues from Ancient Greek vase imagery does make sense, what with the classical craze going on at the time. Plus women had such an appetite for fur at them time they would certainly want to distinguish themselves with the most exotic items they could procure.

I wish there was a book that delved into the history of different patterns and their popularity throughout history, it would be so interesting!

I found some birthday money the other day I had stashed away years ago and never recovered, which means I could contribute some more funds towards wardrobe completion i.e. buy clothes!

After patiently waiting ten days for the listing to end - having discovered it minutes after it was first listed - I won this lovely Alice McCall leopard print dress. Its very rare to find leopard print of quality, especially on Australian Ebay, so I was very happy to happen upon this. Personally I like print that is true to the size of an actual leopard coat, which for some reason is seldomly done on fabric so that was a big seller for me.

I also purchased a neat little navy velvet bolero - that's two more things crossed off the Lust List!

I am required to share ten "interesting" points about myself in response, I am unsure if they are interesting or not, but here are ten points nonetheless:

I love musical soundtracks, cornier the better.
My favourite colour for the first decade of my life was yellow; for my second, deep red.
I have an obsession with names. I have read so many books on the subject I can pretty much tell the roots and meaning of any name I come across off the cuff. Also, I have discovered that bookshop workers can misinterpret a girl buying baby name books. Once I did so in school uniform and got the utmost look of disgust at my stomach from the woman at the register!
I don't think black looks good on everyone.
I am Australian, but people routinely try and convince me I'm not.
I am writing a fantasy novel and have been working on what shall be a saga for four years now. I spend most of my days dreaming.
I used to hate clothes, and when I found something I like I bought two or three of the same. That shifted for no discernible reason when I was fourteen, and then fashion became an obsession.
I wear sunglasses all the time, it makes me feel safe. A little barrier between be and the world you know?
I'm reserved not shy or repressed, there's a difference.
The thing I am most self conscious about is my hair, I was teased as a girl and my anxiety still remains.

I have always adored Louis Vuitton - and more specifically their trademark monogram canvas. I know there are many who do not, just as I know there are many who share my feeling on the matter. I cannot say exactly why it inspires me more than other designer bags, but only that it always has. I have fond memories of walking through the store in as a girl in awe, hanging of Mamma's hand (apparently I regaled the shop assistants with a tale of how I found a giant cockroach in our house on one memorable occasion).

I know it is entwined with its image of prestige and its long tradition of quality, but other than that I just happen to genuinely like the look. The letters and emblems are prettiful :) Oh and ironically they were invented to prevent counterfeiting, poor Mr Vuitton. I have decided, pending viewing it first hand (neither the Gold Coast nor the Sydney store have it on display at the moment), I want the Tulum PM.

Andrea Loest is an artist that experiments with the "dark side of femininity" with wearable art. She parodies personas she considers archetypal in Western society: Lady Boss, Divorcee, One Night Stand, Easy Bunny and so on. Summer is pretty much here and soon I shall be wearing my delicate pastels and florals again. One thing that has been troubling me is my sunglasses - yes I love them and they go perfectly with the darker segment of my wardrobe but they seem to dominate my laces and bows - case study here. Since I have a sunglasses plastered to my head almost permenantly it does seem like something I should address, the only problem is: what kind should I be searching for? There doesn't seem to much in the way of dainty shades that I am aware of. Suggestions in the right direction welcome!

This dress has been in my wardrobe forever, but alas, unworn. I bought it when I was ...gosh, fourteen or so, which coincided with a major shift in my style (less country club, more dramatic for the record). When I finally revisited my older pieces I came down with a case of Jersey-phobia, it's not the most flattering of fabrics after all. I was just being paranoid in this case I think, its a good heavy weave (when it comes to jersey this means it drapes better). I do need to get the neckline altered though since it shows rather more cleavage than I'm comfortable with, hence the scarf.

P.S. I am transfixed by Betty Draper's collection of pearls. And just generally - she never puts a tragic, stylish toe wrong.

I find this outfit from the ill-fated Cashmere Mafia particularly interesting for its rather daring use of all one colour for the main pieces - and just love that her hair matches her bag as well. There really isn't nearly enough experimentation with matching two-pieces these days. Of course whenever anything has been out for a long time, you need only count the minutes before it comes back in.
